Whether you visit Mykonos for a day or two, or your cruise stops there, with this guide you will be able to organize your visit so easily and make the most of your time there, enjoying of this Greek picturesque island.

ABOUT MYKoNOS

Mykonos is one of the most well-known islands in Greece, known as the island of the winds.

Famous for its parties, its unique charm, its shopping and its cuisine, you should definitely add it to your wish list. You can explore its amazing beaches too, considered as one of the most beautiful ones in the Aegean Sea.

Mykonos has a population of nearly 12.500 people, most of them live in its capital Chora, where you will find a maze of tiny streets, whitewashed steps lanes, beautiful churches and houses around its pier in the middle of a bay.

  • HOW TO GET THERE?

The most common way to reach Mykonos is by plane, either with a direct flight or a layover from Athens, or by ferry from Athens, with over 8 daily ferries operated by various companies.

  • HOW MANY DAYS TO SPEND IN MYKONOS?

It is usually recommended to spend between 3 and 5 days to leisurely visit Mykonos and enjoy all the beaches the fullest. However, if you don't have that much time, you can see the essentials in 2 or 3 days.

  • OTHER USEFUL INFORMATION

The currency in Mykonos is the Euro. You shouldn't have any issues paying via credit/debit card, but it is always better to bring some cash with you. You can find several ATMs and exchange offices on the island.

Tap water is not drinkable on the island. You can have a shower or brush your teeth but bottled water is recommended for drinking.

The plugs and outlets are of type F.

The official language on Mykonos is Greek. However, as it is so touristy, the majority of the people can speak English pretty fluently.

It is considered one of the most expensive Greek islands, however, you will always find a way to reduce costs. For example, in our case we ate a delicious souvlaki/gyro in Sakis restaurant for only 7-8€ plus drinks.

MUST SEE PLACES IN MYKoNOS

These are the places you can't miss when you visit Mykonos:

  • CHORA

The capital of Mykonos is located on the eastern part of the island. Unlike the capitals of other Greek islands like Santorini, it is not built on a hill but along a plain. Exploring its labyrinth of laneways early in the morning is a must, you will fall in love with each corner of the city. The best thing you can do is wandering through as many streets as you can.

  • LITTLE VENICE

It is one of the most well-known points of interest on the island. It is called Little Venice because its 13th-century houses were built over the sea. Below these houses, art galleries, entertainment venues and restaurants have been set up, allowing you to enjoy a unique sunset.

  • PANAGIA PARAPORTIANI CHURCH

The Panagia Paraportiani Church is a unique architectural structure built from the XV to XVII century. Its name translates to "Our lady Of the Side Gate", as it was situated near one of the entrance gates to the old city of Mykonos.  Nowadays, located in the Kastro neighborhood, it is a beautiful church near the sea, known for its distinctive shapes. It is a church built with white lime, you can't miss it to get an amazing photo there!

  • KATO MILI WINDMILLS

Windmills were used basically for grinding agricultural products. They are no longer operational, but they still remain as a symbol of Mykonos. You can find the Kato Mili ones facing the buildings of the Little Venice, and they are the most photographed landmark on the island.

¡Best photo spot alert! If you want to take the same pic as Santi has, Kastro's restaurant has one of the most Instagrammable terraces with sea views. If you go down the stairs at the end, it will take you to some rocks by the sea. From there, you can take a cool photo with the most iconic windmills in Mykonos.

  • BONIS WINDMILL

We also recommend to visit this one too, despite having to climb up the hill from the old port, you will have an amazing view over the island, especially at sunset time! Furthermore, it is the only one that opens to the public as a museum, so you can see how it worked in the past.

  • TASTE THE DELICIOUS GASTRONOMY OF MYKONOS

In Mykonos you will find a wide range of culinary offerings. You can't miss the Greek salad as an appetizer (a combination of tomatoes, cucumbers, onions, olives and delicious feta cheese, drizzled with olive oil and with oregano); and continue with any delicious greek dish you will find, like the moussaka, which is very common there.

If you travel to Mykonos on a budget we would recommend the most typical fast food there: a gyros. It is a combination of chicken or pork wrapped in soft pita bread with the condiments you prefer (tomato, lettuce, cheese, tzatziki sauce, etc.). And as I mentioned before, we ate in Sakis restaurant and it was one of the best gyros we've ever had (considering that we've been to Athens and to other greek islands and we always eat them when we can)!

  • DELOS ISLAND

Unfortunately, we didn't have time to go, but if you enjoy history, it's a possible excursion you can consider. Delos is one of the smallest Greek islands, uninhabited for a long time. You can book a water taxi that departs daily from the port of Mykonos to Delos, which takes about 20 - 30 minutes, or you can book an organized tour. And what can you find there? The ancient ruins; see sights like the house of Dionysus, the Colossus of the Nations or the Temple of Apolo. It is like stepping back in time!

  • ARMENISTIS LIGHTHOUSE

Built in 1891, it is considered one of the most beautiful ones in Greece, and guess what, it is fully functional even to this day! It is located in the Fanari area, on the north-western side of the island, 6-7km away from Chora.

TRAVEL INSURANCE

Travel insurance is a must-have when you're on the go.

Here are four great reasons to consider travel insurance every time you travel abroad:

  1. Protection for Your Stuff: Whether it's your passport or your checked-in bags, travel insurance has your back in case of loss.

  2. Medical Bills Covered: Sometimes, medical treatment abroad can be shockingly expensive. That's why it's smart to have coverage that takes care of those bills.

  3. Flexibility for Your Plans: Life happens, and your travel plans can change unexpectedly. Travel insurance can help you out when things like health issues or last-minute cancellations by hotels or airlines throw a wrench in your itinerary.
